Titanium 6Al-4V ELI (extra-low interstitials), also known as Grade 23, is the implant approved version for the more regular Titanium Grade 5 alloy. The reduced interstitial elements oxygen and iron improve ductility and fracture toughness with some reduction in strength.
6Al-4V ELI Titanium alloy is a VAR melted and remelted alloy and as such has good biocompatibility as well as good corrosion resistance in seawater and marine environments.
The good biocompatibility of 6Al-4V ELI comes from the fact that it will spontaneously passivise in the presence of Oxygen, forming a very thin layer of titanium dioxide. Further enhancement of its biocompatibiliy and corrosion resistance is acheived by anodic oxidation producing thicker protective layers.
